Redefining the Way my Students Engage in the ClassroomRedefining the Way my Students Engage in the Classroom

Leading A-Level Excellence Through Innovation

Published on 09 Mar, 2026

As an astronomy enthusiast, studying physics felt like a natural choice. Yet, as fascinating as the subject is, there were moments when difficult topics nearly ended my love for the subject. I was lucky that I have teachers who guided and inspired me to pursue physics and follow their path to become an educator.

Today, as an academic leader in an A-Level school and a developer of interactive videos for IGCSE and AS/A Levels used in mySecondTeacher, I see my role as an extension of the same mentorship I once got from my teachers and perhaps inspire them to fall in love with their subjects along the way.

The Changing Trends in A-Level Education

As an A-Level academic leader, I understand that content mastery alone is not enough.

Students today need:

  • Conceptual clarity
  • Exam technique precision
  • Analytical thinking
  • Confidence under timed conditions

The expectations have shifted. Questions are increasingly analytical and application-based, and the integration of digital learning in daily routines has increased. Students these days consume information through videos, search online instantly for explanations, and navigate more information than ever before.

In our school, we embrace a flipped classroom model. Instead of relying solely on textbooks or printed notes, students learn core content through mySecondTeacher's videos at home, and revise with additional learning materials through HomeSchool.asia. Classroom time is then dedicated to problem-solving and discussion. Meanwhile, teachers become learning facilitators and assist students in solving questions in the lessons.

However, passive video-watching doesn't always lead to deeper understanding, and I have noticed that students were not fully engaged in the class. I have observed students putting tremendous effort, like watching a 25-minute video, and still struggling to apply those concepts in mock tests or exams. This would reduce students' confidence and affect their performance under pressure.

So I ask, "How do we guide better with what they're already using?"

Trying New Teaching Techniques and Tools

When I first came across Kung Fu Quiz, I realised that it has untapped potential to work as an in-class activity that encourages quick thinking and builds confidence, especially for struggling students.

Thus, I asked my teachers to create interactive quizzes using Kung Fu Quizzes for all subjects and attached to each interactive video in mySecondTeacher and encouraged them to try them out in class.

The shift was noticeable.

Students began paying closer attention while watching the videos because they knew they were being tested on key concepts. Since the Kung Fu Quiz was created in "Assessment Mode", it was best for teachers to view reports on misconceptions using the analytical insights tools in KFQ.

Meanwhile, students engaged more in the classrooms, comparing results, discussing answers, and clarifying doubts. Additionally, their confidence grew stronger as they solved challenging questions while doing past paper questions.

The results are clear: There's a real classroom engagement when teachers play quizzes, more hands raised, deeper learning, and students actively discussing answers with one another.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

As an academic leader, my responsibility is not to chase trends, but to evaluate what genuinely strengthens teaching. As exciting new technologies and tools are, A-Level education still demands:

  • Essay writing precision
  • Data interpretation
  • Structured argumentation
  • Examination mastery

Technology cannot replace these foundations. But it can reinforce understanding, provide immediate feedback, and create structured revision opportunities. Thus, we currently make use of both platforms: mySecondTeacher and Kung Fu Quiz, while making use of proven pedagogical methods on pen and paper.

  • mySecondTeacher strengthens content delivery and conceptual mastery.
  • Kung Fu Quiz brings the interactivity a lesson needs, builds students' confidence, and encourages active learning.

A Reflection for Fellow Leaders and Teachers

From my experiences as a former A-level student and now as an educator and academic leader, education technology evolves thoughtfully. This thoughtfulness can be seen in the EdTech platforms we use in our classes, like mySecondTeacher, Homeschool.asia, and Kung Fu Quiz, where pedagogy comes first. By doing so, students are much more likely to focus better, manage their workload, and perform at their best. But I believe that technology itself is not enough, and the human touch must be present. That's why inspirational teachers have the power to spark curiosity, plant the seed of motivation for the next generation of passionate individuals who love their craft. May you be your students' inspiring light!
